Birthdays

We don't celebrate birthdays with food and parties. We feel as though that sort of celebration is best left up to the parents where personal decisions can be made about cost, nutrition, time and location. In kindergarten, we celebrate the day of your child's birth by doing the following:

1) Light a pretend cupcake candle.

2) Sing happy birthday in the classroom.

3) If you would like to donate a book to our classroom, you are       welcome to come to read this special book on your child’s birthday.   Please email me to schedule a time.

4) Your child will wear a birthday crown for the entire day!

I encourage children not to discuss birthday party events held outside of school.  We want to protect feelings in case someone wasn't invited or couldn't attend.  I am not allowed to disseminate birthday invitations - even when the entire class is invited.  There is an element of liability for distributing invitations on Dekalb property to a non-Dekalb function. Please use your email list given after Curriculum night to arrange for invitations.

We believe that this plan will allow us to celebrate your child on his/her birthday while honoring individual family celebratory decisions, protecting instructional time, being sensitive to food allergies and avoiding messes in the cafeteria.  I appreciate your support in this endeavor.
